FAQ Open Call
WHAT KIND OF PHOTOGRAPHY ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
We are looking for all types of photographic and lens-based work. For example, photographs, photo collages and alternative processes such as tintypes and cyanotypes are all welcome! It is important that your work fits this years theme: Transitions.
We accept all forms of photography: from documentary & photojournalism to fine art & conceptual work, and everything in between. This is what makes Fotofestival Schiedam so special: we are celebrating photography and visual storytelling, in all forms.
WHAT IMAGES DO YOU NOT ACCEPT?
We kindly ask you to keep in mind that this is a nation-wide art project that will be on view in highly trafficked public spaces. This means they will be viewed by people of all ages (kids, grandparents, family dogs etc.) Please be civil and responsible.
WHY IS THERE A FEE, AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR?
This fee contributes to the work and expenses of building and maintaining a International Photo Festival of this scale — including installation and maintenance, permitting, public liability insurance, paying the jury for their time, and a small portion of the printing and production costs.
Fotofestival Schiedam a non-profit project, in collaboration with many regional non-profits. In order for the project to remain people-powered and flexible. The application fee covers only 35% of the overall cost. Fotofestival Schiedam and our partners heavily subsidize the remaining costs by writing lots of grants.
We have worked hard to keep the application fee as low as possible for you!
CAN I APPLY WITH MULTIPLE PHOTOS?
We ask you to apply with your most powerful photo. One photo can say more than a thousand words. Therefore we ask you to apply with one photo per artist.
IF I AM SELECTED, ARE THERE ANY ADDITIONAL COSTS INVOLVED?
We handle all the curation, designing, permitting, insurance, promotion, installation and maintenance of the exhibition. All you need to do is shout out on your socials that you’re part of Fotofestival Schiedam!
I DON’T LIVE IN THE NETHERLANDS OR EUROPE? AM I ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE?
Absolutely! The Open Call is open to photographers from all around the globe. In fact, the included artists from the previous edition of the exhibition hailed from 17 countries, like India, China, South Africa, Singapore, Russia and Brazil among others.
WHAT HAPPENS WITH THE PRINT OF MY WORK AFTER THE FESTIVAL?
Your work always remains in your property. By applying, you confirm that FFS will exhibit your work from September 3 to September 20 at the 2020 edition of the festival. The photo will be printed once. You can collect your work after the festival (September 21) on our festival location, otherwise it will be destroyed. Unfortunately we cannot ship photos abroad, unless the artist takes (financial) responsibility for it.
