This encouragement award is an initiative of Cultural Forum Schiedam and offers a stipend to three Dutch photographers. This stipend is attached to an assignment to produce new work within the theme of social change in the city. The photographers aim their lenses to contemporary Schiedam. The 19th century gin industry and 20th century port industries have turned Schiedam into an arrival city for migrants for a long time. As a result the city’s population is diverse and its composition continuously changing. What is currently happening in the neighbourhoods of Schiedam and how is this changing social fabric visible in all the fringes of the city? This question is the foundation of the photographic research of the Schiedams Water Stipend photographers.
In a process of silent scouting a professional jury has selected three photographers. The jury comprises Ruud Visschedijk (director of KCR), Reyn van der Lugt (photography collector and former director of the Groninger Museum) and Rebecca Simons (curator).
The selected photographers are Sanne Donders, Sander van Wettum and Kevin Osepa. In the coming months they will execute their photographic fieldwork. During Fotofestival Schiedam both the results and the process will be exhibited.
