Magnum Photos is an international cooperation of photographers founded in 1947 by the famous photographers Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson and David Seymour. The cooperative has acquired a status of mythical proportions and is still perceived as the highest achievement for some young photographers.
The exhibition Picture Yourself is a celebration on the theme of portraiture; the exhibition combines portraits by six internationally acclaimed Magnum photographers: Elliott Erwitt, Bruce Gilden, Philippe Halsman, Martin Parr, Steve McCurry and Paolo Pellegrin. Each
photographer has their own characteristic visual vocabulary. From the colourful portraits of Martin Parr to the sometimes absurd black-and-white prints of Elliot Erwitt, this imagery will be recognized by many.
During Fotofestival Schiedam these iconic photographs will be exhibited in proximity to new trends in photography and image culture, such as social influencers on Instagram or image bank photography. What is the current status of the autonomous portrait in an era of digital connectivity?
