In Artificial Reality, the German photographer Lena Kunz introduces us to women who own dolls that strongly resemble real-life babies. With these photographs, Kunz aims to show the limits and possibilities of affection and unanswered love. Although they are unable to show any emotional response themselves, these artificial dolls possess an authentic quality that brings out the love and care of its custodian.
Owning a so-called reborn baby also allows the caretaker to experience a sense of control and stability, as the dolls are unable to grow older or get moody and upset. In this intimate series of photographs, Kunz portrays how they offer a personal answer to the incompleteness and loneliness that these people are experiencing.
